In Genesis, God pronounces the consequences for Adam and Eve's disobedience. Then he says something very interesting to the woman: "You will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you" (Genesis 3:16 NLT).
To understand the biblical principle of masculine authority, we really must start with the ultimate authority: God! And of course, it's not without significance that the Bible only refers to God with masculine pronouns. His most endearing title is "Father." This alone should be enough to persuade us of his plan for leadership. But He didn't stop there. When He manifested Himself in human form, it was through His only begotten "Son," not daughter, who then chose 12 "men," not women, as the Apostolic foundation to the Church. And finally, when the Cannon of scripture was sealed, not a single book of the bible had been authored by a woman.
The New Testament tells us that a woman is to have no position of authority over a man, because from the beginning, the woman had proven more susceptible to deception than the man (1 Timothy 2:12-14). It's here that we discover God does not call women to preach. If God did not qualify women to lead the natural family, how much less are they able to lead the family of God? One might use for example, the isolated case in the Old Testament, where God provided leadership through Deborah, in order to justify women leading the Church. But this no more supplants male authority in the Church than did Josiah, Israel's child king, negate parental authority in Israel. Some defend female authority with the proof text, "In Christ there is neither male nor female" (Galatians 3:28). Yet this actually proves counterproductive to their cause, since it was written by Paul, the very man who established gender-specific roles in the Church. Paul explains that women are to be silent during the church service. He says they are not permitted to teach or to have any authority over the men (1 Timothy 2:11-14). Paul even went as far as to say, if we disagree with this it is because we are "ignorant (1 Corinthians 14:33-38).
